Terms for drivers
Last updated: 6 October 2026
These terms apply when you use the ZeroFare Driver app. By signing up you agree to these terms and our privacy policy.
1. Who can drive
To take trips you must have, and keep valid:
- a full UK (or recognised) driving licence;
- a private hire driver licence from a council we work with;
- an enhanced DBS check, renewed as we ask (usually every 3 years);
- the right to work in the UK;
- a private hire vehicle licence for your car from the same council as your driver licence;
- hire and reward insurance, and an MOT where the law needs one.
You upload these documents in the app. We check them before you can go online and remind you before they expire. You can't go online while a required document is missing or out of date. Tell us straight away if anything changes, including points, convictions, cautions or a change of address.
2. Your relationship with ZeroFare
You are self-employed. You choose when to go online and which trips to accept. You are responsible for your own tax and National Insurance. Nothing in these terms makes you an employee or worker of ZeroFare, except where the law says otherwise.
3. Trips and fares
- Riders see a fixed price before they book. You see what you will earn before you accept.
- You keep 100% of the fare. We take no commission. When a rider uses free miles, ZeroFare pays you the free part.
- Tips go 100% to you.
- If a rider cancels late or does not show up, you get the cancellation fee shown in the app, even if we can't collect it from the rider.
- Paid waiting time, extra stops, tolls, airport and congestion charges the rider pays go to you in full.
- If you join a driver subscription, the fee and how often it is taken are shown in the app before you agree. It is taken from your earnings first, otherwise by Direct Debit.
4. Payouts
We pay your earnings to your bank account through Stripe on your payout day (shown in Earnings). You need to complete Stripe's checks to be paid. If a payout fails, your money stays in your balance and is sent once your bank details are fixed. Where the app offers Cash out now, you can be paid straight away to an eligible debit card for the fee shown before you confirm. Your weekly and yearly earnings statements are in Earnings.
5. Location and the app
While you are online or on a trip, the app shares your precise location with us, including when it is in the background. This is needed to offer you trips, show riders where you are and work out fares. It stops when you go offline.
Using fake GPS or location apps, emulators, modified apps or anything else to cheat the system is not allowed. We will take you offline and may suspend your account.
6. Standards
- Be polite and safe. Follow the Highway Code, your council's licence conditions and our community rules.
- Only carry the rider who booked and their group. Don't accept cash for app trips or ask riders to book outside the app.
- Don't discriminate. Assistance dogs must always be carried unless you hold a medical exemption from your council.
- Keep your car clean, roadworthy and matching the details in the app.
- Don't drive tired. Take regular breaks. The app takes you offline after the maximum driving time set by ZeroFare and asks you to rest before going online again.
7. Ratings and account reviews
Riders rate trips. We look at ratings, acceptance and cancellation rates and safety reports to keep the service fair and safe. We may suspend or end your access if you break these terms, your documents are not valid, or there is a serious safety concern. We will tell you why and give you a chance to respond unless safety or the law prevents it.
8. Insurance and responsibility
You must hold valid hire and reward insurance for every trip. You are responsible for your vehicle, fines and charges you incur while driving (for example parking, speeding or congestion charges), except where we agree otherwise in the app.
9. Leaving ZeroFare
You can stop driving and delete your account in the app at any time (Account & documents › Delete account) once your earnings have been paid out. We keep licensing records for the time the law and our operator licence require. See Delete your account.
10. Changes and law
We may update these terms. If a change matters, we will tell you in the app at least 14 days before it applies and ask you to accept the new terms. These terms are governed by the law of England and Wales.
